So, sit tight and i’ll tell you exactly how to treat your chicken coop for mites! let me tell you a little bit about my flock and coop first. hubs and i have anywhere from 20-35 chickens at a time. (we raise them dual purpose and i have an full ebook on how to raise them here.) so we have a pretty big chicken coop.. Identifying red mites in the coop. to be sure red mites are definitely what you're dealing with, go into your coop at night with a torch and a piece of white paper. check along the perches. if you have a large number, you may be able to see them. rub the paper along the bottom of the perches. does it have red smears?. Came home yesterday to this poor girl with mites ! sure learned a lot in a few hours but everything seems to back under control. as i frantically race to the local coop and i can't understand why everyone isn't freaking out because my chicken has mites – the nice gentleman calmly says – "welcome to farming ma'am "..
As a chicken keeper, dealing with red mite can be a quite a tricky challenge. these small parasitic mites often live in the chicken coop during the day. when the night comes, they begin to feed off the blood of the chicken. the infestation of the red mites can occur in all kinds of chicken houses. however, the one kind of coops that tend to suffer more from their infestation is the wooden. I have been raising chickens for more than a decade and (knock on wood) never had a problem with mites on my chickens or in my chicken coop. so they absolutely can be prevented. while mites can be a huge threat to backyard chicken flocks, they certainly aren't a given.. A good way to spot if you have red mites is if your chickens are reluctant to go to roost at night. the best way to eradicate the red mite is to re-house your chickens and treat the coop. it’s nearly impossible to remove red mites whilst your chickens are still living in the coop..
